The Arulmigu Prasanna Venkatachalapathi Temple in Tallakulam, Madurai, celebrates its magnificent Theppotsavam (Float Festival) as the grand finale of the annual Purattasi Brahmotsavam festival. Celebrated on the 11th day of this holy Vaishnavite festival (occurring between September and October), the event draws thousands of devotees to the sacred Tallakulam temple tank (Thallakulam Theertham). During this spectacular ritual, the processional deity Lord Srinivasa Perumal, alongside his divine consorts Sridevi and Bhoomadevi, is elegantly adorned with brilliant silks, traditional jewellery, and dense garlands of fresh flowers. The deities are then ceremoniously seated upon a massive, brilliantly illuminated wooden float (Theppam) that is meticulously decorated with colourful flags and electrical fixtures. As the beautifully lit raft is pulled across the water by hundreds of ecstatic devotees to the resonating sounds of the Nadaswaram (traditional pipe instrument) and devotional chants, the shimmering reflection of the float on the dark waters creates a highly spiritual atmosphere that completely transforms the bustling Tallakulam neighborhood into a vibrant arena of community worship.
